About Us

Dr Nicholas Altuneg - Behavioural Optometrist
B.Optom (Hons) MOAA MACBO

Eye 028-199x300I established Eyes by Design in January 1998.

I completed a Bachelor of Optometry course at UNSW with honours in 1993 and have also completed the Masters of Optometry courses in Behavioural Optometry, Advanced Contact Lens Studies and Ocular Therapeutics.

The fellowship in Behavioural Optometry is the highest and most respected qualification in Behavioural Optometry in Australia.

I commenced the fellowship programme with the Australasian College of Behavioural Optometry in 2007. I passed all three of the practical components of this course including case studies, written and oral examinations in the same year. On successful completion of my thesis I will become a Fellow in Behavioural Optometry

As a Behavioural Optometrist I have a passion for helping children, especially more difficult cases including learning difficulties. I am committed to helping all children reach their full potential. I have worked on a broad spectrum of conditions ranging from Autism, Aspbergers, learning difficulties, hyperactivity, gifted children, intellectually disabled, partially sighted and others.

I also enjoy working with adults and the elderly. You are never too old to develop and improve your abilities!

I allow extra consultation time and utilize the latest technology (I’ve got lots of toys) to diagnose a broader range of conditions and to detect them as early as possible.

Some conditions can not be cured and only prevented so early diagnosis is critical!

I have a passion for all things sport. I have represented NSW in table tennis and enjoy soccer, golf, cricket and tennis.

Angela Altuneg - Practice Manager

I am the wife of Nicholas and co owner of Eyes by Design.

I have helped to build the practice from the ground up with Nicholas.

I am not originally from the optical industry.   However, I have had intensive experience in high level customer service and business.

My role is as practice manager and this involves management of staff, accounts, administration and inventory.

This allows Nicholas to do what he does best – looking after your eyes!!

I am very fortunate to be in a position to use my skills plus do what I love best – looking after people and their needs.

I get excited seeing that we make a difference to peoples lives and I love getting to know our patients and their family’s.   I love that we are able to give our patients good vision and I feel very satisfied when I see the positive impact that this provides to their lives.

Miriam Murrell - Optical Dispenser

I am a qualified optical dispenser and have worked in the industry for six years. I enjoy working with professional family practices that value a high level of care about their patient's eye health and provide great customer serive.
Part of my role at Eyes By Design is to work with customers and patients to assist them to pick the most suitable frames for their needs. I help them to choose frames that complement their personal style, preferences for comfort, and vision needs.
I enjoy it when a customer finds just the right frames, knowing that they will be happy with their glasses.

Monica Wright - Orthoptist

I qualified as an Orthoptist in 1999 at the University of Sydney.

Orthoptists are Allied Health Professionals specialising in the assessment, diagnosis and non-surgical management of eye disorders. Orthoptists work in a variety of settings. However, I have always had a special interest in the visual development of children. Additional to my Orthoptic degree, I have a Masters Degree in Special Education (Sensory Impairment) and have commenced a degree in Primary education.

I have previously worked with leading Paediatric Eye Surgeons in Sydney, at The Children’s Hospital at Westmead. I have also worked in educational settings, with children who have special needs.

Over the years I have been fortunate to work with some wonderful allied health professionals and educators of children with special needs. This has allowed me to develop specific skills for working with children.

I enjoy incorporating my vision knowledge into ways to assist children to reach their full developmental and learning potential.
