Get Driver’s License Back!
James* made an appointment with the purpose to retain his drivers’ license after having a stroke six months prior.
At only 56 years old, James’ stroke affected the left side of his body. He has only had a partial recovery.
James doesn’t feel his vision has changed since the stroke.
Optometrist findings
To get the best outcome for James, Dr Nick worked in conjunction with James’ General Practitioner and Neurologist.
Dr Nick performed many tests to assess if James was able to meet the RMS requirements to hold a license.
Dr Nick found James to have a visual field defect (Inferior Left Quadrantanopia with central sparing). This is where there is a loss of the lower left quarter of the visual field in both eyes and this can commonly occur following a stroke. It can be permanent if the defect does not spontaneously resolve in the first three months after a stroke.
Recommendations
A new multifocal prescription was prescribed for James with his general day to day life.
Dr Nick will review James’ vision in six months.
Results
It was not good news. James did not meet the RMS requirement to hold his drivers license due to the partial loss of his visual field. This was the biggest challenge for James, but he has a very supportive family.
James says ‘Although the news was devastating for me, I will never wonder if there was a chance because I had the best care and testing by Dr Nick. He left no stone unturned.’
