Vision & Attention Problems

Some children with learning difficulties exhibit behaviours of impulsivity, hyperactivity and distractibility. Mostly, children with these symptoms are labelled “Attention Deficit Disorder” (ADD) or “Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder” (ADHD).

A hidden vision problem can cause the same signs and symptoms that are attributed to ADD/ADHD. Due to these similarities, all children with symptoms and signs of ADD/ADHD should undergo a comprehensive vision assessment to avoid misdiagnosis. A recent study also showed that children who are diagnosed with ADD/ADHD are 3 times more likely to suffer from a common vision disorder called “convergence insufficiency”. This disorder can further burden children with attention problems.  This can be effectively treated with appropriate vision aids and/or vision therapy.

Symptoms that are common to both ADD/ADHD and some learning related vision problems include:

  • Poor concentration
  • Difficulty sustaining attention to work
  • Fidgeting and squinting
  • Clumsiness
  • Lack of attention to detail
  • Difficulty organising tasks
  • Lack of awareness of the world around them
  • Ability to complete set tasks
  • Task avoidance
  • Poor listening skills

It may be surprising that these symptoms could be related to a vision problem!  But vision is more than clear sight.  Best vision occurs when the eyes are able to focus team and track together with appropriate processing of the information received (visual perception).

Vision is such a complex process – can you afford to assume it is working properly in your child?

If you are concerned about your child then contact us today for a comprehensive assessment.  As assessment by our behavioural optometrist is more than just a sight check.  We provide extra specialised tests and we allow extra time to ensure reliable results.  You will benefit from our expertise for optimal diagnosis, treatment and the caring approach from all our staff.  Nicholas himself has four children and relates very well to children of all ages.
