Clear Distance Starts With Slowing Eye Growth

Myopia (short-sightedness) causes distant objects to appear blurry because the eye is too long. Glasses or contact lenses make vision clear, but they don’t slow the eye growth that drives myopia. That’s why we focus on myopia management, practical, evidence-based strategies to slow myopia progression through the school years.

Myopia is becoming more common worldwide. Acting early can help your child achieve a lower prescription and reduce the long-term eye health risks associated with high myopia.

How Myopia Develops

In a normally sized eye, light focuses precisely on the retina (the light-sensitive layer at the back). In myopia, the eye grows longer, causing light to focus in front of the retina, making distant objects blurry.

Factors that can influence myopia include:

  • Family history (one or both parents are short-sighted, or of Asian heritage)
  • Less time outdoors and more near work (study/screens at close range)
  • Early onset (younger children who become myopic tend to progress further)

Myopia often progresses steadily during primary and high school, then slows in the late teens/early twenties.

Common Symptoms of Myopia

You may notice:

  • Blurry distance vision (copying from the board, reading road signs, recognising faces across the oval)
  • Squinting, sitting closer to the TV/whiteboard, holding books or devices very near
  • Headaches or tired eyes after intensive reading/screen time
  • Teachers are reporting reduced attention to distance tasks or difficulty seeing class content.

Regular eye exams are the safest way to detect myopia early, as progression can be gradual and easily missed.

Treatment and Management

Myopia management aims to slow the rate of eye growth, not just sharpen vision. We’ll recommend one option,or a combination, based on age, prescription, lifestyle and clinical findings.

1) Myopia-control spectacle lenses

Special lens designs alter how light focuses in the periphery, signalling the eye to slow growth.
Great for: younger kids and families who prefer a simple, glasses-only routine.
Feels like ordinary glasses, lightweight, scratch-resistant, with optional blue-light control and sun solutions.

2) Soft contact lenses for myopia control

Daily disposable lenses designed with myopia-control optics.
Great for: older children/teens, active kids, and sports enthusiasts.
Routine: single-use; hygiene is straightforward, and we teach it step-by-step.

3) Orthokeratology (“Ortho-K”)

Custom overnight contact lenses that gently reshape the front of the eye while sleeping. Remove them in the morning for clear daytime vision.
Great for: responsible older kids/teens, swimmers and contact-sport players.
Routine: night-time wear with careful hygiene and regular follow-up.

4) Adjuncts & habits

Outdoor daylight, sensible screen distance, regular breaks, and good lighting support visual comfort and may reduce risk factors associated with myopia progression.
Dr Nick will tailor simple, realistic steps that your family can follow.

What Happens If Myopia Isn’t Managed?

Glasses and regular lens updates make vision clear, but they don’t slow eye growth. As prescriptions climb (especially into high myopia), the lifetime risk of conditions such as myopic maculopathy, retinal detachment, glaucoma and earlier cataract increases. Slowing progression during school years is an investment in long-term eye health.

What to Expect at Your Visit

  1. Listen & learn – We start with history, lifestyle and goals.
  2. Thorough testing – Prescription, binocular vision and relevant health checks (OCT if indicated).
  3. Clear plan – We explain options, responsibilities and costs in plain English.
  4. Early review – A follow-up to confirm comfort, vision and correct fit/function (especially for contact lens options).
  5. Ongoing monitoring – Typically every 6–12 months (sometimes sooner, initially) to track prescription and eye growth trends and adjust the plan as needed.

Preventing and Slowing Myopia Progression

While we can’t always prevent myopia, you can support healthy habits by:

  • Encouraging outdoor time most days
  • Promoting arm’s-length viewing for devices and books
  • Using the 20-20-20 rule (every 20 minutes, look 20 feet/metres away for 20 seconds)
  • Keeping good lighting for reading and homework
  • Booking regular eye exams to catch changes early

FAQs About Myopia

Q: Will my child still need glasses or contacts?
A:
Yes. Myopia management aims to slow progression, not remove myopia. The goal is to achieve a lower final prescription and improve long-term eye health.

Q: Are contact lenses safe for children?
A:
With proper hygiene, training and follow-up, yes. We teach everything step-by-step and review early to ensure a safe routine.

Q: How long do we continue treatment?
A:
Usually, through the main growth years, myopia would otherwise progress. We tailor reviews and adjustments to your child’s results.

Q: Does outdoor time really help?
A:
Regular daylight time is encouraged for eye health and complements proven treatments—it doesn’t replace them.
