What Is a Pterygium and How Can It Affect Your Vision
A pterygium is a wedge-shaped growth on the white of the eye (conjunctiva) that extends onto the clear front window (cornea). Many are small and mainly a cosmetic concern; some become red or irritated, and a few grow far enough to blur or distort vision.
Pterygia often result from excessive UV exposure and are frequently observed in individuals who spend a considerable amount of time outdoors. They develop faster when you spend more time in environments where there is wind, dust, smoke and dry air.
Many Central Coast residents are prone to this eye condition as Pterygia are more likely to occur when you don’t wear sunglasses or if you have a dry eye condition.
Common Symptoms that you may notice
- Redness, irritation, grittiness or burning, especially in wind or air-conditioning
- A visible fleshy wedge on the white of the eye (often on the nasal side)
- Dryness or a “tired eye” feeling by the end of the day
- Blurry vision or ghosting if it grows onto the cornea and changes its curve
- Cosmetic concern or contact lens discomfort
What Happens If a Pterygium Isn’t Addressed?
An untreated pterygium will continue to irritate the surface of your eyes, causing redness, gritty sensation and glare sensitivity. They can continue to grow across your cornea, distorting your vision and irreversibly scarring the cornea if it covers your central vision.
A pterygium will impact the appearance of your eyes. The fleshy wedge of tissue will become more inflamed and more noticeable to others looking at your eyes.
