Visual Related Learning Problems

Good vision skills are essential for learning.

When your child is learning in the classroom, they need highly developed visual skills to see the activity quickly, process and understand the information they are seeing.

Your child not only needs clear vision for these close vision tasks, but must be skilled in scanning, focusing and visual coordination to learn and get meaning from their reading.

Symptoms of visually related learning problems

Most children may not have symptoms, but some of the more common symptoms include the following –

  • Blurry vision or double vision
  • Eye strain or headaches
  • Short attention span or an avoidance of reading or close work.
  • Excessive blinking or rubbing of their eyes.
  • Using their finger to follow the words or often losing their place while reading
  • Difficulty remembering what they have read or identifying and reproducing shapes
  • Closing one eye, tilting their head to use one eye only, or getting too close to the page.
  • Difficulty remembering
  • Poor hand-eye coordination

These symptoms are just to name a few.

Visually related learning problems are not learning disabilities

If you are concerned about your child’s development or performance at school, it is important to rule out visually related learning problems.

Dyslexia (also known as a Specific Reading problem) is defined as difficulty reading in someone of otherwise normal intelligence.

A visually related learning problem can often appear like dyslexia but unlike dyslexia, the cause of the problem is identified and is easily treated.

Solving a visually related learning problem could save you a lot of worry, stress and the need to do a lot of extra testing which may be unnecessary.

Dr Nicholas Altuneg (Dr Nick), Behavioural Optometrist B.Optom (Hons) MOAA MACBO, has over 30 years’ experience in treating children with visual problems and stopping them from learning and progressing through their school work.
