Multifocal Glasses With Biometric Measuring To Fit Your Eyes Perfectly

Advanced Multi Focal Lens Fitting Eyes By Design
Eyes By Design provides specialised biometric measuring technology to ensure custom fittings that address individual eye needs and reduce adaptation challenges.

Multifocal Glasses Need Expert Fitting (And Why 2026 Changes Everything)

All too often, we have clients come in for an eye test, and we know that multifocal glasses will be a perfect solution to cover all their vision requirements.

But we often get pushback from clients who, in the past, had tried a cheaply made pair of multifocals and they hated them, and it’s for a good reason why they were a disaster.

Here’s the good news: The technology available in 2026 has revolutionized multifocal lenses. At Eyes by Design, we now use biometric measuring technology that creates custom lenses based on YOUR unique eyes, not industry averages. This means the stress and adaptation problems traditionally associated with multifocals can be dramatically reduced or even eliminated.

So, sit tight while we unpack the good, the bad, and the essential when considering multifocal glasses—either for the first time or if you’ve bitten the bullet to come back and try them again.

Our Eyesight as We Age

The lenses inside our eyes can become less flexible with age or due to binocular vision disorders, and this makes it harder for us to focus on different distances.

We need different glasses to correct our vision at different distances, i.e., far away and up close. You may already be using reading glasses while doing up-close work, but they are unsuitable when working on a screen or watching TV.

Multifocal lenses incorporate different lens prescriptions into one cleverly engineered lens. As a result, one pair of glasses can be used for virtually all your activities.

That’s why multifocal lenses are great because, in theory, they give you every single one of those focuses. This saves you from having to swap between different pairs of glasses. There are no visible lines on a multifocal lens, so they look like a normal lens rather than a bifocal.

But if only it were that simple—multifocal lenses have traditionally had some negative aspects, so before you buy, you must understand how they work and what’s changed with modern technology.

How Do Multifocal Lenses Work?

Multifocal lenses are designed around a clinical feature called ‘corridors’. If you could look at a design diagram of a multifocal lens you would see that the different powers in the lens are shaped roughly like a figure 8—distance power at the top, intermediate in the middle, and reading at the bottom.

The sides of the lenses outside the figure 8 visual zone must be manufactured with distortions, and this is the part of the multifocal lenses that some people traditionally struggled with.

The problem with traditional multifocals: Standard lenses use average measurements that only suit about 2% of people perfectly. That means 98% of traditional multifocal wearers are getting lenses that aren’t truly optimized for their unique eyes.

The Game-Changer: Biometric Measuring Technology

At Eyes by Design, we’ve invested in one of only a few Rodenstock DNEye® Scanners in Australia, exclusive to Eyes by Design on the Central Coast NSW. This revolutionary technology changes everything about multifocal lenses.

What Is the DNEye® Scanner?

Think of it as a fingerprint scanner, but for your eyes.

The DNEye® Scanner captures over 7,000 precise measurements per eye, including:

  • The exact length and shape of your eye
  • How light enters and travels through your eye
  • Your day and night vision profiles
  • Corneal curvature and pupil size
  • Your dominant eye and visual preferences

This in-depth data allows us to build a biometric model of your eye,a completely personalized blueprint we use to create your custom B.I.G. EXACT™ lenses by Rodenstock.

Real Results People Notice with Biometric Multifocals

  • Up to 40% sharper vision: especially in tricky zones like intermediate or near vision in progressive lenses
  • Smoother transitions when switching focus from near to far
  • Brighter, more vibrant colors and better contrast
  • Safer night driving: less glare and fewer halos from oncoming headlights
  • Faster adaptation: your brain and eyes adjust to your lenses more easily—often immediately
  • Better low-light vision: improved contrast in dim lighting

How Do I Know if Multifocal Lenses Will Work for Me?

Whether you’ve just been told you need multifocal lenses for the first time or whether you’re an experienced wearer looking to choose your next pair, it can be daunting organizing the glasses.

You’ve probably heard stories about other people who weren’t able to successfully wear multifocal lenses, despite every reassurance from the optometrist or optical dispenser. You may question in the back of your mind whether you will be able to wear them successfully, or maybe you will be another statistic.

Here’s the truth for 2026: Multifocal lenses have dramatically improved, and that’s great news for you. But more importantly, at Eyes by Design, we don’t use standard multifocals anymore,we use biometric technology to create lenses specifically for YOUR eyes.

If you are shopping for multifocal glasses at Eyes by Design in 2026, you will get the latest biometric lens technology, and this is a real game-changer compared to what was available even a few years ago.

Think about how far technology has advanced for smartphone cameras—you can take incredible photos; some mobile phones are now used for professional photography and videography work.

Optical lenses have also advanced in a similar fashion. The multifocal lenses you may have tried a couple of years ago have been superseded by what is available now with biometric measuring.

Not All Multifocal Lenses Are Created Equal

Multifocal lenses have revolutionized vision correction. However, the term ‘multifocal’ is a bit like the term ‘car’.

Buying a ‘car’ is a very individual and personal process, matching your preferences and desires to the features offered by a particular brand and model. It is exactly the same with multifocal lenses. Different lens designs suit different people with different lifestyle requirements.

The difference at Eyes by Design: We don’t just select from pre-made designs—we create lenses based on over 7,000 measurements of YOUR unique eyes. This is the difference between buying off-the-rack and getting a custom-tailored suit.

Why Choose Eyes by Design for Your Next Pair of Multifocal Lenses?

Comprehensive Biometric Measuring

We believe your eyes deserve the best care, which is why we offer a comprehensive examination that includes biometric measuring with our Rodenstock DNEye® Scanner. This examination is more detailed than most and will take longer than you have experienced before, allowing us the time to fully understand how your eyes are functioning and what they need.

With our standards of clinical excellence, state-of-the-art technology, and a focus on behavioral and functional optometry, we assess not just your prescription but also how your vision impacts your concentration, comfort, and overall quality of life.

Accurate Measurements and Custom Design

To get the best results, you need an optometrist who will accurately measure both your spectacle prescription and the positioning of the visual zones in the lenses using biometric technology. We make sure that we make the time to get this right.

We have to consider your vision requirements, the size of the lens area, and how the frames sit on your face. The frame selection is a key part in this too. Read more about how to choose the right frames here.

Lifestyle-Optimized Lens Design

We will choose the most appropriate lens design for your lifestyle needs and then customize it further using your biometric data. The way in which the ‘corridors’ are distributed will make an enormous difference to how well the lens performs for you and your particular vision needs.

For drivers: If you prefer a lens which optimizes driving, we can create lenses with more peripheral vision or better low-light vision for driving at night. Read more about night driving vision here.

For sports enthusiasts: Whether that’s cycling, golf, or tennis, we can custom make a set of multifocal lenses for your activity with biometric precision.

For digital device users: If you’re someone who uses computers and digital devices all day, there needs to be extra consideration taken in the lens design. Our biometric technology allows us to optimize the intermediate zone exactly where YOU hold your devices.

Three-Month Vision Warranty

We provide a three-month vision warranty, where if any additional testing, adjustments, or lens replacements are required then this is covered without charge to you. We are committed to providing you with the best vision possible.

With biometric lenses, adaptation issues are extremely rare—but we stand behind our work 100%.

What Happens if I Am Given the Wrong Lens Design?

Cheaper and older technology lenses fail because the distortions cover a larger area of the lens periphery and are harder to see around. The corridors of vision are often too narrow to be fit for purpose in critical focusing areas.

Cheaper multifocals are often not ideally suited to computer vision. This is due to where you typically view your screen, which is below your eye level. This means you would need to keep your head at a particular angle for a long time, which is just uncomfortable.

You have to adjust your head to be looking through the correct zone on your lenses and this is harder to do in a poorly designed lens. The more peripheral distortion in the lens, the more of a disorienting feeling you could experience when you are looking through them while walking around.

With biometric lenses, these problems are virtually eliminated. Because your lenses are made based on exactly how YOUR eyes work—including how you naturally hold your head, where you look, and your visual habits—the corridors are positioned perfectly for YOU, not for an average person who doesn’t exist.

Will I Get Used to Multifocal Lenses if They Don’t Feel Right?

The more accurately the multifocal lenses are made for your needs, the more comfortable they will be to wear. Some people feel comfortable straight away with a new pair of multifocal lenses, while others take time to adjust.

With traditional lenses, people may feel unsteady while they attempt to get used to the new lenses. You need to train your eyes, head, and brain to adjust your head and vision angles so that you see out of the correct lens zone when doing all your daily activities.

But if you are unable to train your eyes to look through the right visual zones, and/or the lens design, prescription, or manufacture is poor, then you may never get used to them.

The biometric advantage: Because B.I.G. EXACT™ lenses by Rodenstock are made using your exact biometric data, most people adapt immediately or within days—not weeks or months. Your brain doesn’t have to work as hard to adjust because the lenses are already adjusted to match how YOUR eyes naturally work.

Dr Nick was invited to speak internationally about this breakthrough technology and its impact on real-world vision. We’ve seen firsthand how big the difference can be when a lens is custom-made with German engineering using real biometric data.

Frequently Asked Questions About Multifocal Lenses

What are multifocal lenses?

Multifocal lenses (also called progressive lenses) incorporate different lens prescriptions into one cleverly engineered lens, allowing you to see clearly at all distances—far, intermediate, and near—with one pair of glasses. Unlike bifocals, there are no visible lines on a multifocal lens, so they look like normal lenses. The different powers are arranged in corridors, with distance power at the top, intermediate in the middle, and reading at the bottom.

How long does it take to adjust to multifocal glasses?

With traditional multifocal lenses, adaptation can take anywhere from a few days to several weeks, and some people never fully adjust. However, with biometric multifocal lenses created using our Rodenstock DNEye® Scanner, most people adapt immediately or within just a few days. Because these lenses are made using over 7,000 measurements of YOUR specific eyes, your brain doesn’t have to work as hard to adjust—the lenses are already adjusted to match how your eyes naturally work.

Why are my multifocal glasses blurry?

Multifocal glasses can be blurry for several reasons: incorrect prescription, poor lens quality, improper fitting, or choosing a lens design that doesn’t match your lifestyle needs. Traditional multifocals use standardized measurements that only suit about 2% of people perfectly. At Eyes by Design, we use biometric measuring technology to create custom lenses based on your unique eyes, eliminating the blurry zones that plague traditional multifocals. Our B.I.G. EXACT™ lenses by Rodenstock can provide up to 40% sharper vision, especially in intermediate and near zones.

Can I wear multifocal glasses for computer work?

Yes! In fact, multifocal glasses can be specifically optimized for computer work. The key is having the intermediate zone positioned correctly for where YOU typically view your screen. With our biometric DNEye® Scanner, we can measure exactly where you naturally look and create lenses with the intermediate zone positioned perfectly for your computer use. We can also design lenses specifically for digital device users who spend all day on screens, ensuring comfortable vision without awkward head positioning.

How much do multifocal glasses cost?

Multifocal glasses vary in price depending on the lens technology and design. While basic multifocals may be cheaper, they often fail because they’re made using average measurements that don’t suit most people. At Eyes by Design, we offer premium biometric multifocal lenses (B.I.G. EXACT™ by Rodenstock) that are custom-made using over 7,000 measurements of your unique eyes. While these are a premium investment, the dramatic improvement in vision quality, comfort, and adaptation time makes them worthwhile. Contact us for specific pricing and to discuss options that fit your budget and needs.

What is biometric measuring for glasses?

Biometric measuring for glasses uses advanced technology to capture thousands of precise measurements of your unique eyes. At Eyes by Design, we use the Rodenstock DNEye® Scanner—one of only a few in Australia and exclusive to the Central Coast—which captures over 7,000 measurements per eye including the exact length and shape of your eye, how light travels through your eye, your day and night vision profiles, corneal curvature, and pupil size. This creates a complete biometric model of your eyes, allowing us to design lenses specifically for YOU, not based on industry averages.

Why do some people struggle with multifocal lenses?

People struggle with traditional multifocal lenses because they’re made using standardized measurements that only suit about 2% of people perfectly. This means 98% of traditional multifocal wearers get lenses that aren’t optimized for their unique eyes. Common problems include narrow corridors of vision, excessive peripheral distortion, blurry zones, and difficulty adapting. At Eyes by Design, our biometric technology creates lenses based on YOUR specific eyes, virtually eliminating these traditional problems. The corridors are positioned exactly where YOU naturally look, making adaptation much easier or even immediate.

Can I get multifocal lenses if I failed with them before?

Absolutely! Many of our clients who previously failed with traditional multifocal lenses have had tremendous success with our biometric B.I.G. EXACT™ lenses. If you tried multifocals years ago and hated them, the technology has dramatically improved—and more importantly, our biometric measuring ensures the lenses are made specifically for YOUR eyes. We’ve helped many “multifocal failures” achieve comfortable, clear vision with this breakthrough technology. Our three-month vision warranty means if any adjustments or replacements are needed, they’re covered at no charge.
