Why Your Glasses Prescription Isn’t the Full Story

Ask someone about their vision, and they’ll usually talk about their prescription.

They might say their eyes have changed, that their glasses feel stronger than before, or that they’ve started needing help reading. A prescription gives you a number, and numbers feel definitive, so it’s easy to assume the prescription is the most important part of a pair of glasses.

It’s only part of the story.

Two people can have the exact same prescription on paper and experience their glasses completely differently. One feels comfortable almost straight away. The other notices headaches, eye strain, blur at the edges, or a nagging sense that something’s not quite right.

That doesn’t necessarily mean the prescription is wrong. Often, vision involves more than correcting blur.

At Eyes by Design in Kincumber, optometrist Dr Nicholas Altuneg (Dr Nick) sees this regularly, and it usually comes down to understanding how the whole visual system works, not just the numbers on a prescription.

What a glasses prescription actually tells us

A glasses prescription describes how light needs to be adjusted so it focuses clearly on the retina.

It tells us whether someone is short-sighted, long-sighted, has astigmatism, or has a misalignment in their eyes. That information is essential for designing lenses; without it, nothing comes into clear focus.

What it doesn’t reveal is how well your eyes work together when reading or switching focus. Eye coordination and binocular vision matter just as much for genuine comfort and clarity day to day, and a prescription alone can’t capture either.

Why two people with the same prescription can see differently

Vision is highly individual. Even with identical prescription numbers, two people’s visual experience can be completely different.

Part of that comes down to how the eyes coordinate and focus. Part of it comes down to how a person uses their vision. Someone who spends the day at a computer places very different demands on their eyes than someone who drives long distances or constantly switches between near and far tasks.

Dr Nick often points out that vision isn’t just about seeing clearly for the few seconds of an eye test. It’s about how comfortably and efficiently your eyes function across an entire day of real activities, and that’s usually the difference between glasses that feel effortless and ones that never quite feel right.

The role lens design plays in visual comfort

It’s easy to assume that once you know your prescription, all lenses are basically the same. Lens design can make a real difference in how natural and comfortable vision feels.

Traditional lenses are often built around standard assumptions about the eye. That works reasonably well for many people, but it doesn’t account for the fact that every eye has its own shape and optical characteristics.

Modern lens technology enables more personalised designs based on additional measurements, sometimes including detailed information about the eye itself and about how the finished lenses will sit in front of the wearer within their chosen frame.

Aligning the lens design more closely with the wearer can lead to smoother visual transitions and better everyday comfort. For some people, the difference is subtle. For others, particularly those in demanding visual environments, it can make a real difference to how easily they adapt to new glasses.

Why frame fit matters more than people realise

Frames are usually chosen for style, and understandably so. People wear glasses every day and want them to look good.

But frames also serve a functional purpose. How a frame sits on the face determines where the lenses sit in front of the eyes, which affects the lenses’ distance, angle and stability throughout the day.

If a frame slips down the nose, twists slightly, or sits unevenly, it can throw off how accurately the lenses line up with the eyes. Even a well-designed lens can feel less comfortable if it’s not positioned properly.

That’s why careful frame selection and adjustment matter as much as the lenses themselves. Frame and lens work together as a system, not as two separate parts. At Eyes by Design, that can include precise measurements of how your chosen frame sits on your face, to help support more accurate lens positioning in the finished glasses.

Why modern life makes these issues more noticeable

Our visual environment today demands far more of our eyes than it used to.

Think about how often you’re on a computer or phone, how much you read, and how much driving you do. All of that requires constant shifts in focus and attention, and small inefficiencies in eye performance can lead to faster fatigue and poorer performance throughout the day.

Tired eyes, headaches, intermittent blurring, or difficulty concentrating can all be signs that the visual system is working harder than it should.

When this happens, people often assume the prescription must be wrong. Sometimes it is. Just as often, though, the real issue is how the lenses, frames and visual system interact.

Looking beyond the prescription

When glasses don’t feel quite right, it’s worth taking a broader view.

Rather than focusing only on whether the prescription has changed, it’s worth considering how the eyes are coordinating, whether the lenses are designed appropriately for the wearer, and whether the frame is supporting those lenses correctly.

Dr Nick believes that understanding these details is what makes eye care genuinely personalised and effective, rather than relying on averages and assumptions.

Vision, Done Properly

At Eyes by Design, this is what we mean by Vision, Done Properly.

Clear vision doesn’t come from shortcuts or generic solutions. It comes from understanding how the eyes work, choosing lenses designed to support that function, and pairing them with frames that keep those lenses in the right position.

When personalised eye care, precision lenses and thoughtfully chosen frames work together, vision often feels more natural and comfortable.

Supporting confident vision for life

For many people, new glasses aren’t about updating a number. They’re about feeling confident in your vision again, whether you’re reading, working, driving, or just getting on with everyday life.

Understanding the full picture of how vision works is often the key to that comfort.

If your glasses don’t feel quite right, or your eyes seem to be working harder than they should, a comprehensive eye examination can help determine why.

At Eyes by Design in Kincumber, Dr Nick and the team focus on understanding each patient’s visual needs so that lenses, frames and eye care work together to support confident vision for life.

FAQ

Can two people with the same prescription see differently?

Yes. A prescription matters, but it doesn’t account for everything that shapes visual comfort. Eye coordination, focusing ability, lens design, frame fit and daily visual demands all influence how someone experiences their glasses.

Why do my new glasses feel wrong even if the prescription is correct?

Sometimes it isn’t the prescription. How the lenses are designed, how the frame fits, or how your eyes work together can all affect whether new glasses feel comfortable and natural.

Does frame fit really affect vision?

Yes. Frame fit affects where the lenses sit in front of your eyes and how stable they remain throughout the day, which influences how accurately they perform and how comfortable your vision feels.

Are all lenses designed the same way?

No. Different lenses use different design approaches. Some modern lenses use detailed measurements of your eyes and how the frame sits on your face to create lenses with greater clarity, a wider field of view, and easier adaptation.
